National Novel Writing Month: Pre-Writing

Not the first of any month, however. It's the first... of November.
And November is National Novel Writing Month.
50,000 words. 30 days.

Every day I intend to update you on my progress, and this year maybe I'll share an excerpt from each day as well.
Blank pages are disconcerting, nerve-wracking. I avoid my blank-page system by starting my NaNo writing with a quote. This year, it starts with:
Writing a book is a horrible, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven on by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand. ~George Orwell, "Why I Write," 1947
