There's a version of Chess out there where in Endgame either Florence or Svetlana says "Nothing can harm the successful except for success". It's going to bug me until I figure out which one. If you know, please comment XD I'm pretty sure it'd be in the spot where Florence sings, "They will destroy you, not rivals, not age, not success" (hello contradiction! XD) in most versions.

So I was in the car on the way home and Mom asked me how my day was, and I said I had a headache but I had a sub in gym and physics, so that was nice. I proceeded to tell her how batshit insane Mr. Keepers is, and she was like, wait, Mr. Keepers? A short guy who has to be in his 70s/80s now and is obsessed with wrestling? And I was like... yes.

Mr. Keepers was my mom's high school gym and driver's ed teacher, apparently XDD

She pulled out her yearbook and sure enough -- there he is. Or, well, a younger version of himself. She says she remembers him being embarrassing, never being able to remember people's names, and being obsessed with the wrestling team. And that he was friends with my grandpa and used to be involved in a tree cutting company or something and was the one who cut down their old apple tree for them? I don't know. But it's pretty hilarious.

In other news, there's audio of John Jr (and Lauren) singing a bunch of SA songs at this thing Duncan and Steven did recently on YouTube if you look around for it. Including John singing All That's Known and the two of them singing Left Behind.

It's... different XD And kind of funny to hear Moritz sing about his own death.

Also, that guy on YouTube who's translating the Swedish Chess DVD messaged me to tell me he's got another scene up. That did brighten my afternoon.

So, ages ago, I tried to write Chess into a sort of novella. Looking at my notes and my files, apparently I did three drafts of them, each taking bits of pieces from each other and all varying pretty wildly as I tried to figure out what the hell I actually wanted to do with this project. It remained extremely unfinished. Because it might entertain some people, I'll post it, but I don't have the time or ambition to wade through the three drafts and try and figure out a good narration and I don't want to waste perfectly good scenes I dropped just because they didn't go with my changing idea of the plot. So I'll just share all the scenes from all the drafts excluding duplicates. Since they're from different drafts, they may or may not contradict each other and there will only be a vague chronological order, I'm not going to read and see XD I've color coded each draft so you can see what chunks kind of go together, I have no idea if that'll help make sense of it or not.

So have fun with it )

A while back Shelli did a House meme where she wrote 10 House/Wilson drabbles (mini-fanfics that are exactly 100 words) inspired by the first 10 songs that came up on shuffle. I haven't really written since NaNo, and no fanfic in ages, so I thought it might be fun to write 10 Chess (the musical) drabbles this way.

I want to live and die for bigger things )

Shock aside -- Elaine Paige has a TV show? It's probably worth looking into which of these musicals Elaine Paige has been in :P

But that list wins just for mentioning Leroux.

Update: Elaine Paige has been in 5 of the 10 musicals on that list.

So, I have the OLCR of Chess now. Or, well, the London Concept Recording. Whatever.

My Opinion )

The power of music is amazing.

I'm listening to 'Glöm mig om du kan' from the Swedish production of Chess (This is a song that is new to the Swedish version). And though I've read the lyrics and a summary of it before, I hardly remember them... but I don't really need to. Even without knowing exactly what is going on, the feeling it inspires is the same.

Even if, knowing what it's about, I feel it's an unnecessary song addition XD

And did I mention the Swedish version of Chess is goooorgeous? With the exception of a couple songs, the music of Chess really is gorgeous even if the story has issues, and you can hardly guess that it was composed by two former members of ABBA... ;P

Not to mention it's quality level raises a surprising amount with the absence of 'One Night In Bangkok' XD (Besides, the only thing that song is good for is the line, "I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine!" and I wouldn't be able to understand that in Swedish anyway)
