A summer's day
A mother sings a song of purple summer
At the heart of everything
And Heaven waits
So close it seems
To show her child the wonders
Of a world beyond her dreams
The earth will wave with corn
The days so wide, so warm
-- "The Song of Purple Summer" - Spring Awakening
I've heard that song so, so many times, and it's always been gorgeous and full of hope (and kickass harmonies -- in an unrelated note, am I the only one who finds it funny that the ensemble members are identified by name? I want to know if, when new people join the show, do they get music with the original ensemble member's names in it? I'm pretty sure they now officially refer to the ensemble parts by what chair they sit in, but we should still start referring to the ensemble by the OBC's names like they're characters from now on. At this performance, the role of Gerard will be played by Gerard Canonico. At this performance, the role of Moritz will be played by Gerard Canonico, and the role of Gerard will be played by Morgan Karr...) but when I listened to it once yesterday I felt like somehow I finally got it. Inside the tumult of the swaying fences and thundering clouds of now we hold on to the hope of a future where the earth will wave with corn, the days so wide, so warm. In the song these lyrics are resonant with the stories of teenagers and ends a story where they look for a bright future after the dark times they have known, but I think it works for everyone today, too. So many of us were told just now of a purple summer ahead for our country and world and so close it seems, and though we can never know for sure what the future will bring today we try to be, must be, confident that "all shall know the wonder / I will sing the song of purple summer."
It occurred to me that if we hadn't just happened to get off school Thurs/Fri I probably wouldn't have been able to see the inauguration live.
Haven't you heardthe word of your body that I can connect anything to a musical?
