So, the Olivier awards are like the Tony awards of British theater, and the Tony awards, for the sadly uninformed, are like the Grammys or Oscars of the American theater world. And they were yesterday.
So my show, Spring Awakening, had a British incarnation from like... Jan-May of this past year, so they apparently fell into the eligibility for these Olivier awards.
I didn't expect them to do well as they practically flopped in London, and predictions weren't looking good for them.
WE WERE WRONG HOLY SHIT.
Time for a nerdy table of what awards they were up for, what they won, and what they were nominated for/won at the Tony Awards in 2007 as a comparison. AND THEN AT THE END I'LL EMBED VIDEOS.
I'll BOLD winning categories.
Overall, SA won more awards in New York, but then again, two of the big Tony awards don't have British equivalents, and SA London got best actor and a Best Actress nomination for Wendla while Lea didn't get nominated in NY. They definitely get props for that. I'm just sort of in shock. Ironically, I thought they'd get maybe Lighting and nothing else, and that was one of the only Oliviers they didn't get :P
Also, even though she didn't win, British Wendla Charlotte Wakefield looked really lovely.
Iwan, Aneurin, and Steven all gave nice speeches, and OUTSIDE THE CUT BECAUSE THE WORLD NEEDS TO SEE I'll add the performance of Don't Do Sadness/Blue Wind. I am so in love with Iwan's voice as Moritz I can't even tell you.
